The Filmmakers

'SUDAN: The Last Male Standing' is a feature documentary film that follows the lives of two young, Kenyan recruits that join Ol Pejeta Conservancy's rhino caretaker unit - a small group of rangers that care for and protect Sudan, the last male Northern White Rhino, and the last two females.  With the species on the brink of extinction, our two ranger recruits are mentored by a seasoned elder with an unorthodox approach.  Spanning over the course of the recruits' first four years on the job, 'SUDAN' allows viewers to experience the joys and pitfalls of conservation firsthand through the lens of the men that look into the eyes of extinction on a daily basis.

DAVID HAMBRIDGE | DIRECTOR & CINEMATOGRAPHY

David is an Emmy® nominated cinematographer & award-winning commercial + documentary filmmaker based in the US.  He began filming 'SUDAN: The Last Male Standing' in 2014.

For years David has filmed with the rhino caretakers closest to Sudan at Ol Pejeta Conservancy, empowering their voices and exposing their character during moments of profound love and painful loss.  Upon developing mutual trust and access with these Kenyan men, David wanted to tell this story with an unorthodox style by focusing on the livelihoods and relationships that surround an animal teetering on the edge of extinction. David believes the loss to extinction should be not only be witnessed by the entire world, but it should be felt.  With 'SUDAN' the film, David shares not only the lives of those closest to the last male standing, but the legacy and lessons that will live on well past Sudan's last breath.

REAL LIVES, REAL IMPACT:

High impact documentaries can make an incredible difference.  That's a fact.  When you support SUDAN, you are supporting verité documentary storytelling from the ground level that is intimately exposing what extinction looks like, what it feels like, and if science can defeat it.  Our characters have granted us their personal trust and story-rights founded on multiple self-funded trips back to Kenya until we basically went broke.  We've built lasting relationships with our characters and Kenyan ground team, ones that will outlast the production of this documentary. Our story reflects that.

WHO BACKS OUR FILM:

We are an independent feature film with fiscal sponsorship from Southern Documentary Fund (501c3)A percentage of all donations made to 'SUDAN: The Last Male Standing' go directly towards conservation, particularly in saving the northern white rhinos from extinction. Ol Pejeta Conservancy is a supporter of our film, granting us unprecedented access to the story of the northern white rhinos.
